“Baadi”; a settlement on the banks of the river, carrying a bag of scarcity

Ghorahi is the main market of Dang and New Bus Park is one of the centers of Ghorahi Bazaar. To the south of the bus park is a settlement on the river bank in which there are about 60 houses of the Badi community. These are small houses covered with tin and are located at close proximity to eachother. Most of the men here are making a living by earning daily wages. Women, on the other hand, are unemployed and spend the afternoon in the hot sun.

They also want to become entrepreneurs. They have this dream to make a proper living by earning some good amount money. However, they have not been able to find the employment they are looking for. “My husband works for a daily wage, and his earnings is too low for him to educate his children,” said Kamala Nepali, a local. She says, “we are uneducated and if we anywere skillful training was provided, we could earn from our homes”.

Kamala’s husband Krishna loads and unloads goods in the car and earns up to five hundred rupees daily. Sometimes you don’t even get that job, you only earn a hundred rupees a day, ‘says Kamala.’ It is difficult to support a family with such a small income now.

Now some women here beat the ballast. However, now it has become a big industry selling sand and ballast, creating even severe unemployment to the locals. “If there was any help from anybody, we could have raised chickens or goats, but we haven’t found any organization to redeem us from this crisis” said Nirmala Nepali, a local.

As there is no government school nearby, parents are paying high fees to send their children to boarding schools. “It would have been very helpful for us to have a nearby government school with at least five classes but it is located in long distance from here and there is always a risk of road traffic accident to our children if we send them there to study ,” said Siva Nepali, a local.

Most of the women here have studied not more than grade five while only some of them have studied up to 10th grade. The number of those who have passed SEE is very low. The Baadi community is now worried about their own settlement. They want the government to distribute original documents regarding the lands they have been staying and using as soon as possible. “If the government provides books, copies and clothes for their children, we will be very relieved,” said Kamala Nepali.”The main problem here is unemployment,” she said. “We need training and some capital to run an enterprise. We can become self-sufficient if the government helps.”
